Our Story

FROM RAILWAY ROOTS TO MODERN CNC MACHINING

17D began in 2010 producing and supplying large scale locomotives and wagons. What started from a genuine passion for railway engineering has developed into a capable machining and engineering business serving the rail industry, subcontract customers and the 5" and 7.25" gauge hobbies.

The company’s background is practical rather than corporate. From building a first miniature steam locomotive at the age of 14, through to working in the heavy engineering side of preserved railways, the business has always been built around making things work properly.

Today, that same approach is applied to CNC machining, reverse engineering, material sourcing and helping customers solve real engineering problems quickly and effectively.

Why “17D”?

The name 17D comes from the traditional locomotive works and depot coding system. It references the nearest steam depot and reflects the company’s strong connection to railway engineering and locomotive heritage.

It is more than just a name — it represents where the business came from and the practical engineering culture that still shapes how we work today.

How We Developed

BUILT THROUGH REAL ENGINEERING WORK

The company has grown steadily by helping customers get parts made, problems solved and machinery back working.

Early Roots

Miniature Steam Engineering

Practical engineering began early, with a first miniature steam locomotive started at the age of 14.

Preserved Railways

Heavy Engineering Experience

Experience in preserved railway engineering gave the business a practical understanding of real components, repairs and problem solving.

2010

17D Founded

17D was established to create and supply large scale locomotives, wagons and engineering parts.

Today

Subcontract CNC Machining

The business now supplies full-size train parts, CNC machined components and general engineering support.

Our Approach

AN ENGINEERING PARTNER NOT JUST A SUPPLIER

We work best with customers who need more than a basic machining service. If a part needs thought, sourcing, reverse engineering or a fast turnaround, that is where 17D adds real value.

Responsive

We understand that engineering work can be urgent. Customers come to us because they need practical answers and a quick, reliable route to finished parts.

Flexible

We welcome one-offs, repeat batches, awkward components and jobs that need a little more thought than usual.

Problem Solving

Reverse engineering, material sourcing, machining strategy and practical advice are all part of how we help customers get the result they need.

Rail Industry Understanding

BUILT AROUND CRITICAL COMPONENTS

The rail industry often requires more than simply machining a part from a drawing. Components can be obsolete, urgent, worn, incomplete or difficult to source.

Our background gives us an understanding of the critical nature of rail components and the importance of getting parts made correctly, quickly and with clear communication throughout the job.

Alongside full-size railway work, we continue to supply into the 5" and 7.25" gauge hobbies, maintaining a direct connection to the miniature railway engineering that helped shape the company.

Modern Workshop

SMALL TEAM. MODERN MACHINES.

17D remains a small, mostly family-run team, but we continue to invest in modern CNC machinery and equipment.

That combination gives customers the benefit of personal service and flexibility, backed by serious machining capability and a workshop that continues to move forward.
